3 Tips to Follow Through on Everything

In December, I dedicated a day to creating a vision board for 2017.  In the past, I would create a board and toss it in the back of the closet, never to be seen again.  That is, until the end of that year and I’d evaluate the board not surprised that I hadn’t achieved half of what was listed.  At my core, I didn’t believe in those things.  It was something to do and I treated it like a fun art project as opposed to a map to my future.  At the end of the day, I wasn’t willing to sacrifice the time, money or brain power it took to achieve them.  I was lackadaisical, noncommittal and fearful.

This year’s plan is solid but flexible–as plans and goals change.   I allowed space for more to happen than what’s on the board.  The board will grow as the year goes on and new ideas emerge.  The only thing to do is Commit, Focus, & Follow Through.  Here’s how you can too.

How to Follow Through on Everything

  •  Believe in What You Want and Set Realistic Goals

Success starts with meaningful and well-thought planning.  As the old saying goes, “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”  Make a list of steps that will get you closer to your goals.

Next, think about why you want to achieve these things.  Whether it’s for financial freedom, award or a promotion you need to carefully consider what you’re after and keep envisioning it to keep you motivated.  Continually visualizing what you want  keeps you going when the path gets mundane or more challenging.

  • Give Yourself Deadlines and Reward Yourself for Meeting Them

What stops many from achieving anything is being overwhelmed.  Overwhelm then leads to fear and then it’s over.  If you find tackling multiple steps to be overwhelming, choose one thing each day to complete.   By the end of the week, you will have completed 7 steps toward your goal.  Back yourself on the back, rinse and repeat.

When you reach a major milestone, reward yourself by doing something you enjoy.  Don’t rest on your laurels thought,  get back to work and start busting down more of those milestones.

  • Tell A Friend or Business Partner Who Will Hold You Accountable

Be wise in your choice for this one.  Choose a friend or colleague who that will hold you to the goals you’ve set for yourself.  This should also be someone that will call “bullshit” when they notice you’ve been slacking.

If you continue to struggle with following through, I’d suggest you reevaluate what it is you truly want and your motivation behind it.  Next, make it a goal to prove yourself right for a change– you CAN do this.  Make yourself proud for once and go after everything you want.  The power is within you and you alone.

“Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.”
